People You Can Count On!

Signs You Need Repiping

Your pipes are hidden behind walls and floors, so they are often out of sight and out of mind. However, when you have water access issues, this may be a sign that you need repiping.

Homeowners should consider a whole-home repiping project in the following scenarios:

  • Your pipes frequently leak: If they are in constant need of repair, removing the old failing pipes and replacing them with a more durable material may be more cost-effective.
  • You have an older home with original piping: If your home was built before the 1930s, you may have lead pipes. You may have cast-iron pipes if it was built between the 1950s and 1980s. These materials come with significant health risks and need to be replaced.
  • You have polybutylene pipes: These pipes, which have a very short life span and often crack when exposed to heat, are no longer installed in homes and should be replaced.
  • You’re remodeling your kitchen or bathroom: To avoid the hassle of repiping in the future, homeowners may choose to upgrade their piping when they upgrade their kitchen or bathroom plumbing to reduce the risk of future issues.

What To Expect During Home Repiping

When repiping your home, many areas will be under construction for several days as plumbers will need to cut into your drywall to expose the old pipes.

To prepare, we recommend moving items away from walls, covering furniture, and storing valuables to help minimize cleanup and protect your property.

You will also not have access to water during the process, so you may consider temporarily staying at a hotel or with family or friends.

Your plumber will:

  • Obtain any necessary permits before work begins
  • Open your drywall strategically
  • Access and remove the pipes in the least invasive way possible
  • Install new and durable piping in all areas of your home
  • Inspect and test your new water supply pipes

How Long Do Pipes Typically Last?

Piping materials have changed over the last 100 years, and while some options are still used today, others have been phased out due to durability issues or health hazards. The life span of your pipes depends on their materials and are as follows:

  • Polybutylene pipes: 10 to 15 years
  • Galvanized steel pipes: 40 to 50 years
  • Brass pipes: 40 to 70 years
  • Cast iron pipes: 75 to 100 years
  • Copper pipes: 50 years or more
  • PVC pipes: 100 years or more
  • PEX pipes: 30 to 50 years

When your pipes are at the end of their service life, call Comfort First at 919-635-4349 to schedule whole-home repiping.

Frequently Asked Questions

Polybutylene pipes were used between the late 1970s through the mid-1990s before plumbers realized that the plastic material broke down quickly, only lasting for 10 to 15 years. As the pipes deteriorated, they caused serious and expensive damage to homes, which led to them quickly being phased out.

These pipes were most commonly used in southern states, as well as some in the mid-Atlantic and Pacific Northwest. They are stamped with a code that starts with “PB” and are often blue, gray, or black with plastic or copper fittings.

The plastic material used to make polybutylene pipes is prone to bursting and can’t stand up to chlorine, fluoride, and heat, all of which are common exposures for water supply pipes.

Had these folks install a couple of whole home dehumidifiers for me. They were prompt, courteous, professional, and efficient. During the installation, several deficiencies were identified from the previous installers of the existing HVAC equipment and rather than step back or charge extra, they rolled up their sleeves and took care of the problems (that they…
