As we wind down summer and look towards autumn, we try and fit in as much summer fun as we can! From last minute romps at the beach to doing one last cannonball off the diving board, the end of summer is always a fun but busy time. It’s also a hot time as heat indexes can easily reach 100° or higher this time of year. So when the summer fun is over we head inside to the refuge of our comfortable, cool homes.Â
In this heat, your home’s AC is working overtime to keep you cool and comfortable. Unfortunately, when it’s the hottest outside and you need your AC the most, that’s the most likely time for your system to break down! But don’t worry, Comfort First has got you covered when your AC breaks down.Â
From expert services to helpful advice, we are here for you every day, all day! In this blog we’ll explore the most common AC repairs we see and how to spot them early so you can avoid the heat this summer and stay cool in your home!Â
Low On Refrigerant
One of the most common issues we see from homeowners in the area is that their AC needs more refrigerant. Refrigerant runs on a closed circuit, so when it is low it means that you likely have a leak. Because refrigerant is considered a hazardous material, any recharges to your system, leak repairs or other issues need to be handled by a professional.Â
But how do you know if your system is low on refrigerant, and how can you spot this issue early? If your home just does not seem to be getting cool, or if the air coming from your vents has been gradually getting warmer and warmer, you may be low on refrigerant. For large refrigerant leaks, you may be able to see pools of it by your system. The best way to head off larger refrigerant problems is to get them checked out early.
Unit Not Blowing Much Air
What if the air coming from your vents is cool, but there’s just not enough of it to completely cool your home? The answer could be something as simple as replacing your home’s air filter. The air filter plays a vital role in your air conditioning unit’s ability to function properly. If it has been a long time since you changed your filter, dirt, dust and dander trapped in the filter are probably clogging the airflow to your entire house. When that air can’t be circulated through your ductwork network, it causes big problems down the line for your system. To prevent these types of problems from happening, make sure to change your filter on time.
Did you know that Comfort First has our very own filter program, which sends air filters when you need them? Let us take the hassle out of remembering when to replace and get them shipped automatically to your door!Â
Issues With The Fan
Air is circulated throughout your home because of the use of fans in your system. Like all appliances with moving parts, a fan can break or malfunction. The motor can fail, the fan belts can become worn and the lubrication can wear off causing the fan to stop working. Fixing a fan is typically a minor repair; however, if you push it off and do not have the fan fixed, it can cause your compressor to fail which is typically a death sentence for your system.Â
If you hear odd noises, like whining, screeching or banging coming from your system, don’t wait until the unit stops working – get a technician out there immediately to fix the fan before bigger problems ensue.Â
Maintenance Is EssentialÂ
To ward off problems from happening in the first place, the most important thing you can do is to have your system inspected and serviced regularly. We can’t tell you how many times we’ve repaired a problem on an AC system that could have easily been avoided if it had just had its regular service. We advise having a central air conditioner maintained annually, ideally in the spring before the weather gets warm. This service is an overall inspection of your unit which includes cleaning, parts lubrication, fluid top-offs and component checks to make sure all is well. Â
We offer a maintenance agreement that not only provides this essential service automatically but many other perks and benefits as well. Sign up for our maintenance agreement today!
